Study being conducted by the George Washington University and the University of Virginia on the development of adoptive children and their parents
To our alumni families:

This is an important research project being undertaken by the University of VA and George Washington University with the goal being to better understand child development and family functioning in adoptive families. It is my hope that many of you will take the time to respond to Rachel.

All families – hetero and same sex – are encouraged to participate.

Thank you.

Dawn

Dear Friends in Adoption Alumni Families,

Friends in Adoption periodically cooperates with university research studies on adoptive children. I am writing to let you know about a study being conducted by the George Washington University and the University of Virginia on the development of adoptive children and their parents in which you are invited to participate. The study will examine how children develop, the nature of the relationship between parents and their children, and the nature of parents' relationship with each other.

The study will take place during a single visit in your home with your child and both parents by a pair of researchers. The session will begin with a brief interview to gather some basic information about your family. Then you will be asked to participate in a simple videotaped play session with your child lasting about 10 or 15 minutes. You will then be asked to complete a series of questionnaires. The study is expected to take about 120 minutes to complete. The study is confidential, so personal information that you provide will be kept private. There is no financial compensation, but you and your child will receive a small toy and a family photo for participating in the study. In order to participate, your child must be between 1 and 5 years of age at the time of the visit and both parents must be present at the session.

There are two options if you would like to participate.

1. You may let us know that you are interested, and we will have our research team contact you directly. Please email Rachel Farr at farr@virginia.edu or call at 315-271-1050.

2. You may contact the study investigator, Dr. Stephen Forssell, at George Washington University. His email address is Forssell@gwu.edu or you may reach him by phone at 202-994-6323. He will be able to answer any additional questions you may have about the study.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
Rachel Farr
