Hello, we are Steve and Kelly. Although this may be a challenging time we respect your choice and realize it is difficult. If you decide that adoption is the path you are going to choose we appreciate you considering giving us the family we can only dream of.

It is difficult to summarize our background, family and thoughts on parenting in a brief document but we hope that what we’ve shared in this profile will make you feel more comfortable with what a child would experience in our family. Thank you for considering adoption and us.

a couple

We should have met when we were both at the same college, living in the same dorm building and shared some of the same friends, but we didn’t. It took a chance meeting through those same mutual friends three years later for us to meet and since then we have been together. Over the past 13 years we have changed and grown but always had a relationship founded on a love for each other.

As individuals we appear very different. Steve is logical, a planner and enjoys the outdoors. Kelly is compassionate, creative and enjoys cooking. As a couple we enjoy adventure, spending time with our friends and family and relaxing days at home. We couldn’t have managed this without communication, support and a respect for each other.

For adventure we have traveled to many locations around the world to experience different cultures and foods. We also like to go canoeing, cross-country skiing and taking our dog Saboo for hikes. When spending time with our friends and family, it is either a small get together at one of each other’s homes or a day trip somewhere together. Every Friday we enjoy a movie and dinner together and on Sundays Kelly usually cooks a big dinner for us.

family

Togetherness is probably the best way to describe our friends and family. Whether it is helping with a project, cooking a big dinner, or going to the various children’s school events, our family is there. Whenever the family gets together there is lots of good home-cooked food and if it’s telling stories, swimming or sledding, there is always fun and laughing.

All of Kelly’s family lives within the town we live in and Steve’s family is within a couple hours drive. Kelly’s immediate family is her sister and three stepbrothers. Steve has one sister. All of our brothers and sisters have families of their own so there are lots of children.

Kelly’s father and stepmother and both of Steve’s parents are retired and anxiously waiting a new addition to the family. Nieces Taylor and Alex can’t wait to babysit but are going to have to until the grandparents have had their fill! Our best friends Bobby and Sue are considered family and are just about as excited as we are. Adoption is not new to either family as Kelly’s sister and Steve’s grandfather were both adopted.

our home

Our home is on a large wooded lot in a rural area that is great for a child to run and explore. The backyard has apple and pear trees and we even have a great hill for sledding. We are treated to wildlife like deer, turkey and rabbits throughout the year.We have a beautiful view of a river and also have a number of lakes nearby for swimming, boating and fishing. There is a state park within a mile of our home with a golf course and crosscountry ski trails. We live near a small rural town close to schools and parks but are within an hour drive of two major metropolitan areas. Our town has five elementary schools and one of the best high schools in the area.

Two cats Dolittle and Bunny and a small dog Saboo also call our house home. The animals love the attention of our nieces and nephews and Saboo enjoys playing hide and seek.

Kelly is a compassionate person who likes to do things to make people happy. She is a nurse at the local hospital working with the elderly, which takes amazing patience and compassion. Whenever someone in the family is sick she does whatever she can to help them get better. Kelly will make them food, help them with their medical care or just comfort them. You can tell when she is there that she is there for you and truly cares for your well being. All the things that I saw in my mother when she cared for me I see in Kelly.

Kelly is also an excellent cook and enjoys making people their favorite dishes or trying something completely new. Her favorite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon is to make a big dinner. Kelly enjoys teaching our nieces Taylor and Alex how to cook and I know she will be making some special birthday cakes for our child. When Kelly has some time to herself she likes to curl up with a good book or do some scrapbooking. She enjoys making scrapbooks because it helps people remember a special event or person and keep that memory strong.

When I first met Steve I thought he was such a nice guy and after only a couple of months I knew he was the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Steve works very hard as an Engineer, but always makes time for his family and friends. He is always there to help out if needed whether it is help snow blowing a driveway or tutoring for school.

Steve is very energetic and enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, hunting and fishing. Steve is also a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do and teaches a class at the school where he trains. I often hear from the parents of the children that Steve teaches saying how wonderful Steve is with their children, always very patient and nurturing.

Steve is also very dedicated to our nieces and nephews making sure to attend their school functions whenever possible. Whether the kids are playing a new game, whiffle ball or sledding, Steve is there playing along with them. Steve is the most dependable person I know, he is always there when I need him. I could not ask for more in a husband and a friend. For all these reasons and many more, I know that Steve will make such a wonderful father.

parenting

We are excited to encourage our child by being involved in their activities and ensuring they have the opportunity to develop their talents. Instilling confidence in our child is important to us, so they know whatever challenges they face they have the knowledge and support from friends and family to do their best and not be afraid of failing.

Family traditions are a focal point that we just can’t wait share with our child! For Easter Steve’s mom would write riddles in the form of poems. When you figured out the riddle it was a clue that led you to your Easter basket. Every Christmas Eve Kelly’s grandfather would dress up like Santa and deliver presents to all the grandchildren. We are looking forward to creating new traditions of our own.

We both have a strong work ethic and do the best that we can in our jobs but we have learned how to balance work with our personal life. It is important to us to be able to balance work and a personal life because we want to spend as much time as possible with our child.

thank you

We would again like to thank you for considering adoption and us. We know from the other experiences with adoption in our family that it is important a child understand where they came from. We will do our best to ensure our child understands where they came from and that it was an act of love that made our family.

We understand it can be difficult to get a true sense of who people are from just a few pages of text and some pictures. If you like what we have shared of ourselves in this profile and would like to talk to us or arrange a meeting, feel welcome to contact us through Friends in Adoption.
