Hi!

We’re Eva and Eliza. We know that making an adoption plan for your child is an enormous decision. We admire your strength and courage, and thank you for taking the time to get to know more about our family and what we would have to offer as parents to your child.

In the summer of 2005, our lives were blessed by adoption with the birth of our daughter Klara. Open adoption has transformed our perspective on family by bringing not only the joy of our wonderful little girl, but also a lifelong bond with Klara’s birth mother, who will always have a special place as part of our family. We are so excited to be starting the adoption journey again as we seek to meet Klara’s little brother or sister.

We promise that if you choose to place your child with us, your child will have a warm and loving home where his or her spirit and mind will be nurtured and encouraged to blossom. He or she will feel our unconditional love throughout life.

About Us

We met nineteen years ago while we were both students at Yale University. We have been a couple for thirteen years, and share an energy and passion for life and all of its adventures. We feel especially lucky that we were in a committed relationship for a long time before deciding to bring a child into our lives – our communication, sense of “teamwork” and deep love for one another has provided solid footing as we tackle the profound challenges of being parents. This stability gives us great resources to draw on so that we’re able to be loving and consistent with Klara, which we feel contributes to her evident confidence, selfesteem and sense of security.

We live in a very ‘kid-centric’ urban neighborhood, only three blocks from a huge park that includes many playgrounds, wide-open spaces, and even a zoo! Klara especially enjoys the botanical gardens, where she can run around, smell the flowers and count the turtles and ducks (and quack along with them!) by the fish pond. Our neighborhood is very diverse, full of families from many cultures. If you were to decide to place your child with us, it would be a priority for us that your child have role models that reflect your heritage. We’re fortunate to have friends of many backgrounds and live in a community where many cultures are represented.

Travel is a passion that we pursued before Klara’s arrival – not only have we traveled extensively in many parts of the world as a couple, but Eliza lived in Mexico (she is nearly fluent in Spanish), and Eva spent more than a year as a volunteer teacher in Thailand. We have already made it a priority for the three of us to travel as a family, and hope to be able to continue our exploration of the world even as our family grows. When Klara was just a year old, the three of us spent two weeks in the gorgeous French countryside, hiking in the hills, eating fresh croissants from the neighborhood ‘boulangerie’ and exploring outdoor markets full of freshly picked fruit and locally made cheese. When she was 18 months old, we all took off for a week in Mexico – and again, she dove right into the experience, sampling soft tacos and tropical fruit, digging into the sand on the beach and improving her walking technique trekking around ruins. Eliza’s family has a house on an island in Maine, and we spent a long vacation there this summer, where Klara had her first boat ride and saw her first seals in the wild. We will always strive to give your child a wide view of the world and its many possibilities.

Eva

Eva grew up living with her mom, a nutritionist, who was one of the founders of a program called WIC (a nutrition program for pregnant women and their kids). Though Eva’s mom has an illness that caused her to lose her sight at age 45, she never stopped working until she was over 60 – an example that showed Eva that dedication and hard work can overcome serious obstacles. It is a lesson that she looks to every day in her own life.

Eva is a feature film producer, and runs her own small company. This work allows her to combine her love of the arts (she has enjoyed singing in choirs and musical theater since childhood) with her practical and business skills to bring creative, entertaining and socially relevant ideas to a wide audience. Because she runs her own company, she has created a flexible work schedule that allows for plenty of family time.

Eliza

Eliza was raised in New York City, where her mom was an English teacher and her father, who used to be a lawyer, returned to school so that he could pursue his love of architecture. This real-life example of following your dreams had a great impact on Eliza; she feels so lucky to have been raised with a great love of education and a sense of life’s possibilities.

Eliza is the deputy director of a non-profit organization dedicated to ending bullying and harassment in schools. She loves that her work allows her to use her education (she has a Ph.D. in U.S. History from Columbia University) to make social change. Eliza has always played sports – from soccer to basketball to rugby – as well as being an avid hiker and outdoorswoman, and brings amazing energy and fun to our life together.

Our Families

We are very lucky to have lots of family nearby. In fact, Eliza’s parents moved recently to within a 10 minute walk of our house, and Klara is growing up with a close relationship with her Granny in particular, mirroring the wonderful relationship Eliza had with her own Granny growing up. Klara also has developed an incredibly warm relationship with her Uncle Paul (Eva’s brother) who entertains her with funny faces and voices and flying games. Klara has twelve cousins – ranging in age from a year younger than her to 8 years old – and various combinations of cousins and aunts and uncles get together for holidays at one family’s house or another. Klara loves the fun and bustle of these gatherings, where she is totally enamored of the older cousins’ activities and toys.

Klara

Klara is an exceptionally engaged, cheery and verbal little girl who takes on every activity and challenge with enthusiasm. Favorite things include her swimming classes and helping Mommy (Eva) cook in the kitchen. She is also showing a distinct interest in the sports her Mama (Eliza) enjoys – she can already identify a football, soccer ball, baseball and basketball. Her absolute favorite thing so far seems to be listening to and making music, a big part of our family life.

Klara recently started pre-school in a neighborhood Montessori program, which she attends two mornings each week. It is so exciting to hear her bubbling with new sentences, songs and activities that she’s learned in school. It’s also really special to us that one of Klara’s two teachers is also an adoptive mom, so we have talked with her at length about the importance of acknowledging Klara’s whole family, including her birth family, in school. Many of Klara’s friends have siblings, and she has started taking a great interest in babies especially – and seems excited at the prospect of having a little brother or sister of her own.

We hope that this letter has given you some idea of what we’d have to offer as a family for your child.

Each of us learned from our own parents the precious value of unconditional love, as well as the importance of taking the challenges life provides as opportunities for growth. We promise that if you decide to place your baby with us, we will provide your child a life full of love, adventures, art, fun, thoughtful conversations and educational experiences. We would welcome the opportunity to share pictures and letters over the years, and more contact should that be of interest to you. Your child would always know of the strength and love that went into your decision.

We would love to talk with you to answer any questions you have about us and to hear what matters most to you as you consider adoption for your baby. We hope that you will consider talking with us as you make your adoption plan.
